As someone who’s new to the world of projectors, learning about the advanced capabilities and the diverse range of options on the market has been interesting. One category in particular, portable projectors, took me by surprise with their quality and flexibility. BenQ, a strong competitor in portable projector technology, has developed a unique collection of these projectors to fit different use cases and needs. I was able to test out the GP100A portable projector, the all-around home entertainment option, and share my experience with it. This post is NOT sponsored by BenQ. Check out my setup here!

About the Projector

The GP100A is a 1000lm 1080p, premium LED portable projector designed to captivate you in a cinematic and immersive experience. It features autofocus to adjust the image in seconds, 2D auto keystone to automatically adjust the screen in just three seconds, and digital zoom that effortlessly shrinks the size of the projected image to fit wherever you want. It is reasonably easy to set up, but the autofocus may struggle depending on the surface you’re projecting on and you’ll have to manually set it up. This projector does require connection to a power source to be used, it does not include a portable rechargeable battery. It has a built-in 20W 2.1-channel audio system that delivers rich and immersive sound so you don’t need an external speaker system with it. You can also utilize it as a wireless speaker connected by Bluetooth. Once it’s set up, the projector remote is easy to use and you can manually adjust the settings if needed. It has a good throw distance, making it easy to set it wherever you want and watch content at varying screen sizes. It is recommended to project anywhere from 80 inches to 120 inches, but the image only gets distorted if you go smaller since you can manually adjust the focus. Bigger, however, can start to get distorted even if you adjust the focus manually. It can be used for gaming as well, but the input lag is not great for fast-paced or high-intensity games, so I recommend using it mainly for watching content. Below is an example of the general throw ratio of the projector, and yes it is roughly that small!

Functionality

The GP100A is preloaded with Netflix and powered by the Android TV dongle. It works with almost every streaming device and supports AirPlay along with Chromecast. It does have USB-C connectivity to connect easily to your handheld devices, but for the Switch, you will still need the docking station as the console does not recognize connections without it. It’s marketed that it can connect with just one cord, but from first-hand experience, this is not fully true. The handle makes it easy to carry from room to room or you can check out the carrying case to travel with it.

Overall, I really enjoyed using this projector and felt it had good functionality. It was easy to set up, the brightness was great in a dark room and fine in a moderately bright room, and the size was perfect for what it delivers. The only downside is that it does require a power connection, so that may limit its portability depending on your use case. I do recommend checking out this projector as an option for a good portable projector, but be sure to make sure you’re getting something that fits your needs!
