In 2024 I spent a lot of time gaming on the X3100i and X300G 4K gaming projectors from BenQ and wrote articles about specific game experiences on each projector. While the business goal was to share how great the projectors were, I tried to maintain a level of honesty about the experiences by balancing the discussion of the game itself with how it played on the projector. This series gave me the chance to really dive into game analysis and develop my descriptive skills in regards to technology. I also learned a lot about which specs matter to regular consumers, and which are for tech fans! In this post, I’m going to share a bit more about the series and highlight the games featured.

BenQ Game Zone Series

The series was proposed as a way to grow user awareness for gaming projectors since they’re not a well-known gaming accessory. We started with more of a focus on the games, slowly shifting to more focus on the projectors in shorter articles. It’s hard to strike the right balance, but for most of the games I was able to write strong articles that weren’t too long to read. While I would prefer to just write about the games, it has taught me how to communicate the efficiency of a product which led to me writing my own product reviews! The series also gives me an excuse to enjoy games on a deeper level, but sometimes there was pressure to get far in a game in a short amount of time. It will be continuing into 2025 with a potential inclusion of a new gaming projector, so stay tuned!

X3100i Gaming

The X3100i is the bigger, better gaming projector with higher specs and easier adjustment options. I nicknamed it the “big boy” and have genuinely enjoyed using it everytime I had to play a game on it. Specs that matter are visuals, brightness, and adjustment capacity. It is a 4K, making all the visuals as clear as possible, has an extremely high brightness so colors pop, and has manual zoom, focus, and lens shift, which make it easier to get the setup just right instead of relying on iffy auto-adjustments. The more vibrant the game, the better it looked, making them fun to play. It was nice to enjoy multiple forms of content as well, allowing me to game while having the TV on separately. Below is the full list of games I played on the X3100i and some example photos of how the games look, unedited.

God of War Ragnarök DLC / Alan Wake 2 / Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 / Suicide Squad / FFVII Rebirth / Tekken 8 / FFXVI DLC / Rise of the Ronin / Persona 3 Reload / Stellar Blade / College Football 25 / Dragon’s Dogma 2 / Black Myth: Wukong / Death Stranding / Astro Bot / Yakuza: Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth / Dragon Ball: Sparking! ZERO / Metaphor: ReFantazio

X300G Gaming

The X300G is the smaller & portable option, with the intention of being able to take it on trips or to friend’s homes to enjoy gaming everywhere. It’s short throw, which means it has to be closer to the screen/wall which might not be intuitive for users new to projectors, as I was. Despite being advertised as easier to set up, I found the X3100i to be easier because of simpler adjustments. It was good on its own once set up, but the brightness could be higher for a 4K projector. Specs that matter are visuals, brightness, and adjustment capacity. The visuals were still strong, but as mentioned the brightness was lacking and the adjustments required more hands-on adjustments even with the auto features. Below are is the full list of games I played on the X300G and some photos that were edited slightly to up the brightness/color.

The Legend of Zelda: TotK / Super Mario Bros. Wonder / Princess Peach / Paper Mario / LoZ: Echoes of Wisdom / Sonic x Shadow Generations / Jamboree & Mario & Luigi Brothership

There is a strong appeal to getting a gaming projector, I would love to keep the X3100i for the future as it really did expand my gaming experiences. If you decide to look into projectors for gaming, make sure their sole focus is gaming and not home theater or portable. Because of high-refresh rates in games and different types of games, you need a projector that matches the specs without issue. Gaming projectors are designed to do that, and prices are more affordable as they become more common. Check out the options out there and expand your gaming experiences!
